First Reconciliation and Communion

First Reconciliation (Confession)

Children spend three months learning about God's forgiving love and then make their first reconciliation.  This year, the date is December 12, 2009.  In order to prepare for this special day...

  • Children must ...
    • be baptized
    • have completed at least one full year of Religious Education before beginning preparation for First Reconciliation.  Usually this is first grade.  If this is not the case with your child we have special classes for children in other grades.
    • be prepared for the sacrament by attending all the CCD classes and completing the home preparation activities.
    • attend the evening of reflection in October.
  • Parents must …
    • attend the two parent meetings in the fall.  Babysitting will be provided for the December meeting.  See the CCD schedule for more details.
    • work with their child on the activities in the reconciliation packet.
    • participate in the day of reconciliation with their child.  This is a two hour retreat in December when there will be activities for parents and children. Parents will have an opportunity to go to confession at that time also.

First Communion

Children that have completed their preparation for receiving Christ in the Eucharist will make their First Communion in April or May. Families have two options for celebrating their child’s First Communion:

  1. We encourage children to make their First Communion as part of a large group during the First Communion Masses. In 2010, the First Communion Masses will be on April 24 at 10:00 AM, 1:00 PM, and 4:30 PM
  2. Children may make their First Communion during one of the regular weekend Masses during the Easter season.   However, no special recognition of the child(ren) will be made during the regular Sunday Masses.

In order to prepare for this...

  • Children must ...
    • be baptized.  If a child was not baptized at this parish, a copy of his/her baptismal certificate must be turned in to the CCD office.
    • have made his/her first reconciliation.
    • have completed at least two full years of Religious Education - one year before the year of preparation and one year of sacramental preparation.  Usually this is in first and second grade.  If you child was not in first grade Religious Education, we have special classes for children in other grades.
    • be prepared for the sacrament by attending all the CCD classes and completing the home activities with a parent.  Children missing more than two preparation classes must meet with the DRE to make sure they are ready for the sacrament.
    • participate in the evening of reflection and Communion retreat.
  • Parents must …
    • attend the two parent meetings in the winter/spring.  Babysitting will be provided for the January meeting.  See the CCD schedule for more details.
    • work on the communion preparation packet with their child. This packet will be handed out at the January meeting.
