Children's Liturgy of the Word

This is a special program during the 9:30 AM and 11:30 AM Masses on Sunday (except the first Sunday of each month).   The children are called forward after the opening prayer and process to a separate worship space where the readings for the day are proclaimed from the Children’s Lectionary.   They sing the Responsorial Psalm and the Gospel Acclamation and then have an opportunity to reflect on the readings.  They recite the Creed and pray the Prayer of the Faithful including their own petitions.  They return to Church for the Eucharistic Prayer.  This is an opportunity for the children to hear the scriptures in a language they can understand, feel included, and be able to share their responses with their family after the liturgy.  Children’s Liturgy of the Word enables children to recognize the word of God as the foundation of all Christian communities.

Children's Liturgy of the Word is open to the children in our parish who are at least 5 years old, and are entering Kindergarten through 4th grade in the fall.  Registration is not necessary.

We always welcome adult and teenage volunteers to help with this program:

  • Leaders read the scripture to the children, guide them in reflection on the word, and lead them in prayer.  Leaders usually attend either the 9:30 or 11:30 Mass with the children and lead them out before the first reading, then return with the children during the Offertory prayers.  Materials and training are provided, so only a little preparation time is required.
  • Musicians help the children pray through song.
  • Shepherds lead the children to the proper room and signal when to return to church.

If you are interested in being a part of this ministry, to awaken in children a sense of God’s presence in scripture and to open their hearts to God’s word, please call the RE Office for more information.

Leaders should go to the CLOW Sign-Up Page  to view the schedule.
